What are coffee blends?
Coffee blends are combinations of different coffee beans mixed together to create specific flavour profiles. Think of it like making a perfect recipe – we carefully select beans from different regions and combine them in just the right amounts. Some beans might add sweetness, while others bring in nutty or fruity notes. The result is a balanced cup of coffee that’s consistent every time you brew it. This is different from single origin coffee, which comes from just one place. Blending is an art that lets us create unique taste experiences while ensuring you get the same great taste with every bag.
Why do coffee roasters create blends?
Coffee roasters create blends for several reasons. First, it helps maintain consistent flavour throughout the year, even when certain beans might not be in season. Blending also allows us to create unique taste profiles that you can’t get from single origin coffees. We can balance different characteristics – like combining a bean with great body with another that has fruity undertones.
Are coffee blends lower quality than single origin coffee?
Not at all! Coffee blends are just as high-quality as single origin coffees – they’re just different. Think of it like cooking: using multiple ingredients doesn’t make a dish less quality than using just one. Our blends use the same premium beans we use in our single origin coffees. The skill is in combining these beans to create something unique and delicious. Some of the world’s most popular and respected coffees are actually blends. The key is using quality beans and having the expertise to blend them properly.
How long do coffee blends stay fresh?
Coffee blends stay fresh for about 4-6 weeks after roasting when stored properly. The roast date is printed on our bags so you can track freshness. Once opened, try to use the coffee within 2 weeks for the best flavour. Whole beans stay fresh longer than ground coffee, so we recommend buying whole beans and grinding as needed. While coffee won’t go “bad” after these times, it will lose some of its flavour and aroma. The oils in the coffee can also start to go rancid if kept too long.
Can I use blended coffee for cold brew?
Absolutely! Many coffee blends work great for cold brew. Look for medium to dark roasts with chocolate or nutty notes – these often make excellent cold brew. The slow extraction process of cold brew brings out different flavours than hot brewing methods, often resulting in a smoother, less acidic drink. Use a coarse grind and steep for 12-24 hours in cold water. The resulting concentrate can be diluted with water or milk to taste.
What makes a breakfast blend different from other blends?
Breakfast blends are typically medium-roasted and designed to be bright and lively – perfect for starting your day. They often combine beans that provide a good balance of acidity and body, without being too intense. These blends usually feature Central and South American beans for their clean, crisp flavours. They’re made to pair well with milk and to be enjoyable even on an empty stomach, making them ideal for your morning cup.
How do you choose which beans to blend together?
We choose beans for our blends based on how their flavours complement each other. We consider factors like acidity, body, sweetness, and specific taste notes. For example, we might combine Brazilian beans for body and chocolate notes with Ethiopian beans for fruity brightness. We also consider how the beans will react to roasting and how they’ll work together in different brewing methods. Each blend is tested extensively before we release it.
