What makes espresso coffee beans different from regular coffee beans?
Espresso coffee beans aren’t actually different from regular coffee beans – it’s all about how they’re roasted and ground. These beans are typically roasted darker and longer to bring out rich, intense flavours that can stand up to the quick extraction process. The roasting creates oils on the surface of the beans, which help produce that lovely crema on top of your espresso. While you can technically make espresso with any coffee bean, specially roasted espresso beans will give you the best results with proper body, flavour, and that signature golden crema.
How should I store my espresso beans?
Store your espresso coffee beans in an airtight container away from sunlight, heat, and moisture. The best place is in a cool, dark cupboard – not the fridge or freezer, as this can damage the beans. Once opened, try to use them within 4-6 weeks for the freshest taste. Our beans come in resealable bags with one-way valves to keep them fresh, but transferring them to an opaque, airtight container can help them last even longer.
Why do some espresso beans look oily?
The oily shine you see on espresso beans comes from the roasting process. During darker roasts, the oils inside the beans come to the surface – this is totally normal! These oils contribute to the rich flavour and help create that lovely crema on top of your espresso. However, if beans are extremely oily, it might mean they’re a bit too dark or have been stored too long. Our dark roast coffee beans have just the right amount of oil for perfect espresso.
How fine should I grind espresso beans?
For espresso, you want your beans ground very fine – almost like table salt. This fine grind is crucial because espresso uses pressure to force hot water through the coffee quickly. If the grind is too coarse, the water will rush through too fast, making your espresso weak and watery. Too fine, and it’ll be bitter and over-extracted. If you’re grinding at home, start fine and adjust based on how your espresso tastes.
Can I use espresso beans for other brewing methods?
Yes, absolutely! While espresso beans are roasted specifically for espresso machines, they can work well in other brewing methods too. They’re particularly good in moka pots and French presses. Just adjust your grind size to suit your brewing method – coarser for French press, medium-fine for pour-over. Keep in mind that the darker roast might give you a stronger flavour than you’re used to.
How much coffee should I use per shot of espresso?
For a single shot of espresso, use 7-9 grams of ground coffee. For a double shot, which is more common, use 14-18 grams. These amounts can vary slightly depending on your machine and personal taste. The key is consistency – once you find the right amount for your perfect shot, stick with it. Remember to time your shots too – they should take about 25-30 seconds to pull.
Why isn't my espresso producing crema?
Several things affect crema production. First, check if your beans are fresh – older beans produce less crema. Also, make sure your grind size is right and you’re using enough pressure. Water temperature matters too – it should be between 90-96°C. If you’re using pre-ground coffee, it might not produce as much crema as freshly ground beans. Finally, some beans naturally produce more crema than others.
Can I make cold brew with espresso beans?
Yes! While espresso beans are roasted for hot extraction, they can make a delicious cold brew coffee. The darker roast will give you a rich, bold cold brew with chocolate and caramel notes. Just use a coarse grind, and steep for 12-24 hours in cold water. The result might be stronger than with medium roast beans, so you might want to dilute it more.
